Union Square Floor Manager

Reports to: Chief Retail Officer

Schedule: 40 hours, 5 days per week including both Saturdays and Sundays. This position will require the candidate to work primarily closing shifts, which for Floor Managers is 1:00PM-10:00PM.

Strand Bookstore is looking to expand its floor management team across three sales floors at our flagship location in Union Square. We are seeking individuals who are thoughtful, organized, driven to offer excellent customer service and who are eager to work around books!


As one of the Floor Managers at Strand, you will play a crucial role in leading our team of booksellers as well as creating memorable experiences for our devoted customers. You will find yourself wearing many hats, from helping to balance operations of the sales floor to ensuring consistent and valuable customer service. 

Please note: As a Floor Manager at Strand you will be trained in managing several of our sales floors, however we are particularly on the lookout for anyone who may have interest in working at least part of their schedule in our Art Department on the 2nd Floor. Therefore, an interest or background in the visual arts is always a plus. Please do not let a lack of interest in this area discourage you from applying! We want to hear from anyone interested.

Essential Functions:

  • Maintaining daily schedules for all booksellers across several floors of the store, assuring that there is proper coverage at all high traffic areas and that the priority tasks for the day are accomplished in a timely manner.
  • Assist with and/or lead counting down of cash tills and gathering together the daily deposit, including making bank runs and change orders.
    Tracking time and attendance for all reporting staff.
  • Paying attention to shelving and section maintenance needs across your assigned floor, reporting any issues to relevant departments or staff.
  • Paying attention to the growth and development of both newly hired as well as tenured booksellers, assuring that staff are learning processes effectively and efficiently, all while maintaining positive customer service.
  • Delivering reviews for staff as needed and on a yearly basis.
  • Setting the tone. Floor Managers should always look to set the tone for the day, making sure to set expectations and provide reasonable and achievable goals for staff.
  • Managing by walking the sales floor: This means making yourself available and assigning tasks to staff so that you as the manager are available for both customers and booksellers at a moment’s notice. Consistently walking the floor and avoiding remaining in one place long makes sure that in a store as big as Strand, you as the manager are paying attention to as much as you can.

Competency/Position Requirements:

  • At least 2-3 years of management and/or leadership experience in a high volume retail or food service environment is ideal, with a preference for those who have managed in bookstore or library environments.
  • Cash handling and inventory experience.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team while also taking authority as necessary.
  • Someone who looks to give and receive constructive feedback and understands that communication is key to growth and development.
  • Experience with coaching and mentoring staff.
  • Sound judgment and a decisive attitude that allows you to manage any customer or employee concerns in a calm, timely and respectful manner.
  • Experience using bookstore software such as Basil or other similar programs is a plus but not required.
  • A love of books.

Compensation: $21 - $26 per hour, commensurate with experience

Since 1927 Strand Bookstore has been New York’s top destination for books, both used and new. We are in search of a dynamic and results-driven Visual Merchandising Manager to help oversee and develop our many displays of books and merchandise at our flagship location in the heart of Union Square.


As a Visual Merchandising Manager, you will play a major role in shaping the visual identity of the Strand and help to direct the overall customer experience. You will be responsible for directing a visual merchandising team, organizing the replenishment and inventory of all gift products and book displays across Strand’s three retail floors. You will be a direct liaison between our buyers and our customers, aiding in the development of displays and communicating the feedback you and your team receive from customers on a daily basis.


This is a position for someone who can review sales and inventory detail and apply it appropriately and effectively to the operational efficiency of our business. We are looking for someone who enjoys working with and around customers and understands that strong customer service begets more appealing and engaging displays.

 

Please note: The shifts for this position are 8:00AM-5:00PM. This is not a primarily administrative role and working on the sales floor for this position is a requirement.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead and direct a team of 10+ associates to assist in the unloading of a daily delivery of books and merchandise from our warehouse in Brooklyn, helping to troubleshoot issues and communicate directly with the warehouse staff as necessary.
  • Assist with and direct your staff to complete daily replenishment across the flagship store: including pyramid-ing display tables, cleaning displays as necessary, completing inventory, etc.
  • Monitor and analyze sales data along with customer feedback to evaluate the effectiveness of merchandising strategies, making adjustments or communicating with appropriate departments as needed.
  • Source and select props, signage and display fixtures to enhance the visual presentation of merchandise.
  • Train and develop associates on the daily responsibilities of a visual merchandiser, demonstrating and holding staff accountable to techniques and standards.
  • Tracking attendance and performance for all associate staff, delivering feedback or reviews as needed or directed.

Competency/Position Requirements:

  • At least 2-3 years of experience managing a team of visual merchandisers and/or inventory management, preferably in a retail bookstore environment.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull boxes, dollies and carts weighing up to and greater than 40lbs on a daily basis.
  • Comfortable standing and being on your feet for up to eight hours per day.
  • Preference for those with extensive experience regarding the growth and development of a team: i.e. holding staff accountable to policies, standards and expectations as well as offering/spearheading opportunities for development internally.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and departments.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and project management skills.

Strand Bookstore is seeking a full-time stock associate and merchandiser for our flagship location.

The stock associates work across all three floors of Strand creating and replenishing displays of both books and merchandise. As an associate, you will refresh and maintain the aesthetic of the floor, update prices and inventory of products, and act as the final step between product and the customer, ensuring all items are undamaged and accurately accounted for. We are in search of proactive people with a keen eye for detail and experience working in an efficient and independent manner. 

An ideal position for candidates with a well-versed knowledge of NYC culture and current trends in publishing. A good opportunity for those looking to work in publishing.

 

Below you will find more pertinent information regarding the position:

 

Essential Functions: 

  • Unloading large daily replenishment from our warehouse in Brooklyn. Including the lifting and pulling of carts, boxes and pallets, taking these to their designated stations within the store.
  • Prepare the store for daily operations: cleaning display tables/areas, replenishing and redistributing stock for all displays.
  • Maximize sales through display rework and analyzing product sales history.
  • Change displays to promote new product/book launches and reflect monthly/seasonal themes and trends as directed by immediate supervisors.
  • Communicate with supervisors and other departments to ensure smooth flow of items to and from our warehouse in Brooklyn.
  • Maintain tidy overstock locations and adjust stock levels based on sales data.
  • Complete inventory of assigned displays or tables on a regular and as needed basis, communicating to supervisors results. 

Competency/Position Requirements:

  • 1-2 years of customer service experience
  • A background in inventory control is beneficial
  • Must be able to lift, pull, push and carry boxes, carts and dollies of books and merchandise on a daily basis.
  • Ability to stand for full shifts, often having to bend up and down while creating or filling a display.
  • Ability to complete tasks with urgency, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Can work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Flexible and solution-focused, managing multiple projects across the store.
  • Strong analytical skills for effective product placement based on sales data.
  • Ability to multitask.

Our Columbus Avenue location is seeking a responsible individual to play a crucial role in our day to day operations. As a keyholder you are responsible for opening and closing the store, reconciling the cash and maintaining daily deposit paperwork when a manager is not present. The Strand Warehouse is currently seeking experienced Warehouse Associates who are passionate about ensuring the smooth flow of operations. As a Warehouse Associate, you will play a crucial role in the picking, labeling, packing, and inventory management processes for all our Strand locations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Picking and transferring stock for daily replenishment to each store.
  • Receive, tag, and sort items into warehouse stock accurately, ensuring proper inventory management.
  • Safely load and unload shipments from trucks, following established protocols.
  • Verify that invoices match the items received, maintaining accuracy in record-keeping.
  • Skillfully build subscription boxes on a quarterly and monthly basis, meeting quality standards.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 1 year of warehouse experience, demonstrating a solid understanding of warehouse operations.

Marketing Associate (Full Time)

Strand Bookstore is seeking a dynamic Marketing Associate to oversee our social media and digital marketing efforts. The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing marketing campaigns that promote Strand and its products. This role will also assist in managing our e-commerce platform to ensure a seamless and engaging customer experience.

 

Main Responsibilities:

  • Works with communications director on social media calendar, content and copy selection, proofreading, and community management for all channels, including but not limited to: Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and X
  • Create and execute digital marketing strategies to drive online traffic, enhance customer engagement and increase sales.
  • Plan and manage digital marketing campaigns, including SEO/SEM, email marketing, social media and display advertising.
  • Email marketing lead: Responsible for strategy, creative, and copywriting for all email marketing.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for website updates, ensuring content accuracy and alignment with marketing campaigns and promotions.
  • Work cross-functionally across departments such as Communications, Events, Buying, and Graphics to assist in maintaining a consistent brand presence and cohesive storytelling across all channels.
  • Monitor the performance of marketing campaigns and provide regular reports to evaluate effectiveness and ROI.

Additional Support as needed:

  • Works hand in hand with the Director to ensure all Book Hookup and Pick of the Month needs are facilitated.
  • Some marketing efforts (interviews, productions) may take place outside the traditional 8 hour work day.
  • Provide support for special projects and other assigned duties, leveraging marketing expertise to contribute effectively to organizational objectives.

Competency/Position Requirements:

  • 2–4 years of marketing experience, preferably in publishing or book retail
  • Well-read with a passion for literature and the written word
  • Social media and digital savvy, knowledgeable of marketing and social media trends and analytics
  • Basic knowledge of video and photo editing
  • Have a keen eye for customer needs and customer service, focusing on community management
  • Able to work cross-functionally with different departments
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating with various teams.
  • Prioritize deadlines appropriately and complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Deep understanding and experience with MailChimp, Adobe Creative Suite, and social media managers
  • Experience with html and ecommerce platforms (i.e. Magento)

  • Cash handling and inventory experience.

Compensation: $21 - $26 per hour, commensurate with experience

UWS Keyholder & Bookseller (Full Time)

 

Job Type:  Full Time, Non Exempt

Our Columbus Avenue location is seeking a responsible individual to play a crucial role in our day to day operations. As a keyholder you are responsible for opening and closing the store, reconciling the cash and maintaining daily deposit paperwork when a manager is not present. As a bookseller your role is pivotal in preserving our vast collection of books. Your dedication to guiding customers in their selections and providing personalized assistance is invaluable, ensuring that every customer finds the ideal book to meet their needs.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Maintain and organize inventory on shelves, ensuring stacks are neat and alphabetized.
  • Assist with replenishing stock on shelves, cart organization, and locating items for customers.
  • Comfortable training and developing new hires by skill sharing and leading by example.
  • Provide personalized recommendations and deliver exceptional customer service.
  • Process POS (point of sale) purchases, and complete register transactions accurately and efficiently.
  • Assist in determining incoming used book placement and pricing using sales data and online price comparisons.
  • Contribute to various in-store activities and events.
  • Keep workstations and sales floors clean and orderly.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Competency/Position Requirements:

  • Must be able to complete tasks with speed, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Weekend availability is required.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Must be able to lift boxes ranging from 10-50 lbs on a day-to-day basis.
  • Can be trusted to work with little guidance while maintaining a sense of urgency and concentration
  • Must be flexible and solution-focused while working on multiple projects across the store.
